More World Cup mayhem
Ride into the Danger Zone
Even though SJ tried to calm soccer watch events by requiring (free) tickets and moving the "parties" to SAP and Discovery Meadow, the July 5/6 scene devolved into mayhem--yet again. The Merc reports, below.
Police declared an unlawful assembly for the second time amid World Cup festivities in downtown San Jose, after revelers packed an intersection Sunday night and disrupted traffic while exhibiting “unruly” behavior including throwing bottles at police officers, authorities said.
Around 1:48 a.m. Monday, police were called about a half-mile away to First and San Salvador streets for a report of gunfire. Around the same time, police got a report that a man suffering from gunshot injuries was dropped off at a hospital and they linked him to the shooting. The injured man is expected to survive.

Experts: "Entertainment Zones" bring predictable risks
SJ should not be surprised, city planners have warned of the dangers of Entertainment Zones forever. Streetsblog explains, below.
Public Safety and Disorder: The concentration of alcohol consumption, particularly outdoors, creates risks related to public intoxication, disorderly conduct, and increased liability, according to Alcohol Justice.
Lack of Economic Diversity: Entertainment districts fail to provide the diverse, 24/7, multi-use environment necessary for a truly vibrant urban area.
Focus on Temporary Activity: Entertainment zones are often only active on weekends, leaving areas inactive and potentially less safe during the week.
