Assembly candidate Carol Pefley provides a useful primer as to why gas is so expensive in SV and all of CA. "California built a system where gas taxes rise automatically every year," she notes.

• Once you stack taxes, fees, and fuel mandates, Sacramento is quietly siphoning about $1.35 extra per gallon.

• The gas tax is now 63.4 cents per gallon, officially the highest in the nation. Diesel has climbed to 48.2 cents.

• Every attempt to freeze or suspend the gas‑tax increase has been rejected by the Democrat legislative majority.

• Most Californians don’t have the option to bike their kids to school or teleport to work. They drive because they have to and Sacramento knows this.

• Families don’t get automatic raises, but the state gets automatic revenue. If a business did this, we’d call it gouging.
