Are local data centers price-elastic?

Rising data center regulations and overhead make "cost-to-compute" inflate. Are SJ and other cities going too far in their regulation (or moratoria) on data centers? X commenters explore.

What drives data center costs?

IT equipment, which includes chips, accounts for 64% of the total cost of building a data center. Infrastructure accounts for another 29%, which includes electrical systems, cooling, cabling, and fire prevention. Those costs are inflating, up an estimated 40% over the past two years.

Then there’s the cost to actually build the physical structures, which accounts for 7% of data center building costs. Overall, the average per megawatt cost of building a data center has increased from roughly $7 million pre-pandemic to $11.3 million this year.--@trtevornoren on X

AI targeting nepo-baby white collar jobs

The value of a diploma rested on one single thing: rare access to rare knowledge. That knowledge is now available for 20 bucks a month, to anyone, at 3 a.m., no entrance exam required. A 19-year-old kid with AI and some grit produces in one weekend what a firm used to bill 200k for over three months.

No one asks for your school when your agent has shipped the product before the end of the scoping meeting. They look at what comes out. Period. And the worst for the rentiers: AI amplifies those who think and exposes those who no longer do. In the hands of a trained brain, it's a multiplier. In the hands of an atrophied brain, it's a revealer. You immediately see who gets it and who just recites.

The jobs that kept their prestige after losing their utility are going to vanish. And those who lived off a diploma earned years ago are going to discover that the market now recalculates your rank after every game.--@brivael on X
