SJ traffic fatalities nearly double, year to year, according to Merc
On the heels of reports that the murder rate in SJ is up 75% compared to this time last year , the streets of SJ are also proving to be increasingly unsafe. The Merc reports.
A motorist hit and killed a pedestrian Friday morning (4.23) on Mabury Road, worsening a year in which city roadway deaths have occurred at nearly twice the rate as in 2025, authorities said.
The fatal collision was reported at 9:17 a.m. in the 1400 block of Mabury Road, near the Coyote Creek overcrossing and about a half-mile from the Berryessa BART station.
San Jose police said officers responded to find a gravely injured person, who was later pronounced dead at the scene.
An initial investigation revealed a man was crossing Mabury Road outside of a marked crosswalk when he was hit by a juvenile female traveling westbound in a white 2014 Infiniti sedan, police said.
Police said the motorist stopped at the scene and cooperated with the investigation.
The collision marked the city’s 17th traffic death of the year, and the eighth to involve a pedestrian who died. San Jose had recorded nine traffic deaths, five involving pedestrian victims, at the same point in 2025, according to data compiled by this news organization.
