SF Standard media bias backfires
Hey, we're all used to wildly prejudicial, not-very-smart, pro-tax media coverage in the Bay Area. But this last weekend offered something new: local opinion leaders rising up and taking the reliably lefty SF Standard to task for their transparently biased coverage of the transit tax opposition. A selection of comments from X follows.
Allen: "reads like paid activism"
"@sfstandard just dropped an early hit piece that’s so sloppy it’s almost impressive. They spent years rightly calling out @SFBART’s waste, fraud, and overspending… but the second someone pushes back on *more* taxes, suddenly they’re in full “Yes on the tax” mode.
"This reads like paid activism, not reporting. Who else is done with this nonsense?" --@Debora_allen1. Allen is former Board Director for BART.
____________
TAN: WEAPONIZING JOURNALISM
"The Standard probably should try to stick with more journalism and less partisanship.
"Disappointing how journalism is sometimes weaponized like this.
"It’s not unreasonable to ask for accountability from our cities and attacking accountability is speaking power to truth."-- @garrytan. Tan is president and CEO of Y Combinator and founder of Garry's List.
{Editor's note 1: We love Garry's "speaking power to truth formulation": forgive us if we steal it! }
{Editor's note 2: Neither Allen nor Tan are members of the group opposing the transit tax }
We're onto you
SJ Merc tried (unsuccessfully) to tip the scales back in 2024 for the RM4 tax hike by dismissing opposition arguments. After local tax experts found huge mistakes in the ballot language, RM 4 was pulled from the ballot.
