Mostly peaceful shootings
Super Bowl gameday proved to be a Sunday Bloody Sunday in downtown SJ, with multiple shootings resulting in yet another fatality and multiple serious injuries. Various local media outlets report.
An early morning Super Bowl Sunday shooting on Paseo de San Antonio, near South Third Street, killed two men.
A shooting at San Pedro Square on Sunday night after the game sent five adults to the hospital.
The deaths come on the heels of a recent surge of murder and violence in the city, including:
A police officer being shot in the head in downtown San Jose.
A 17-year old being shot dead outside a baby shower in West SJ.
The Black Friday shootings at Valley Fair.
A stabbing murder at Santana Row.
A violent smash 'n' grab of a jewelry store in South SJ that put its owner in the hospital.
And late last year, a shooting on Dec. 26, 2025, left one person dead and three others injured near downtown. And on Dec. 7, 2025, one death and four people shot in Willow Glen.
San Pedro Square is the first of a projected slate of "entertainment zones" meant to revitalize SJ's moribund downtown.
Social media commenters say the weekend violence puts paid to city officials' ongoing tone-deaf and counter-factual claim that San Jose is a "safe big city."
