☆ What candidate Khamis is looking for in new County CEO

After a rushed and strange, secretive process, the county announced that James Williams will be replacing retiring CEO Jeff Smith with James Williams, the county’s attorney. Supervisor Candidate Johnny Khamis notes that the process seemed hasty and flawed, but offers some advice for CEO-appointee Williams. An Opp Now exclusive.

Going forward, I welcome James Williams to his new post, and will be looking for three key executive leadership attributes to his tenure:

  • Focus on visible results. In particular, we need to get our new mental health facility, which has been hopelessly delayed and mismanaged, constructed and servicing needy people as soon as possible.

  • Managerial acumen at holding staff accountable. I look to the creation of a metrics dashboard that will let the Supervisors—and the public—know when staff departments are succeeding, and when they aren't. And we should be rewarding teams that meet their goals.

  • A meaningful plan for cost reduction on projects. County activities routinely soar over budget or have limited or no bidders. We need a new CEO who can figure out why costs keep going up, and what we can do to control them.
